PICD and PalThink launch the Ask Participate Initiative

The Palestinian Institute for Communication and Development (PICD) in partnership with PalThink for Strategic Studies held discussion roundtable on the right of access to information in Gaza.

The roundtable took place on August 20, 2019, aimed to promote the concepts of civil peace and nonviolence within the Palestinian society and make the journalists, social media activists, and civil society voices to reach officials and sustain an appropriate way to spread these concepts social media platforms.

The discussion facilitated by the activist Rawan Ghayada, who illustrated the qualitative partnership between PICD and the Pal Thank, and PICD keenness to seek partnerships with various NGOs in order to raise awareness of Human rights and democracy concepts.

Samir Al-Manama, a lawyer at Al Mezan Center for Human Rights, said that getting information is one of the most important factors in civil and political rights that promotes economic and cultural rights and is one of the most important tools for evaluating the performance of ministries and governmental bodies.

He added that UN General Assembly resolution 59/1 clearly stated that access to information is a core of all rights.

Manama confirmed that the draft on access to information law that submitted on 2005 had many reservations on it and no grantee to implement it.

“Our Palestinian reality is suffering from severe disarray and the legislature is absent and the executive authority dominates over the Judiciary, therefore, this right must be established to empower individuals and achieve a fundamental transformation.” he added

In response to a question, he elaborated that there is a link between the disclosure of information and the mood of the official, there is no law requiring an official to give information, and without information, the journalist would be unable to do his job freely.

Nevertheless that Ask-Participate initiative was built up in cooperation between PICD and Pal Think within the project to promote the concepts of civil peace and non-violence in Palestinian society, through which a series of discussed sessions will be carried out on the right of access to information.
